There is no more conservatism in the Republican Party so what are conservatives applauding about at the RNC?

  1. It depends on what you mean by a conservative.

Back when I was young (and yes, we had modern conveniences like wheels and fire then!) both the major parties had liberal and conservative wings, and the liberals were neoliberals and the conservatives were actually classical liberals (along the lines of Adam Smith and Edmund Burke).

Ronald Reagan's reconstruction of the Republican Party created something the U.S. hadn't had much of since the Revolution: the true conservatives, the equivalent of the English Tories.

I believe there is still a considerable strain of the traditional American conservatism (that is, classical liberalism) in the GOP, but the Reaganist inclusion of religious Toryism and the post-Reagan neoconservatism has diluted the resistance to big and free-spending government; it's now merely a resistance to government competence.

  2. The Republican Party is the party of big business and the wealthy, plain and simple.  They posture as conservatives in order to gain the votes of regular working people who would otherwise have no reason to vote for them.

  3. There isn't?

  4. You think that's hard, try to find a moderate Democrat these days.

  5. Why are you worried about it?

  6. Unfortunately the Republican Party was Hijacked by big business under a neoconservative ideology.  So we will use that $711 Billion a year military to protect American "business" interests through-out the world (though the jobs, benefits etc. won't go to Americans).  A shame paleo-conservatives (more like George Washington) are a minority in the Republican Party or have ended up joining the socialist Democratic Party.
