  1. They haven't used actual newspaper for a LOOOOOONG time.  It was used because it was cheap, and it soaked up the greasy oil from the deep fried foods.

They now use fresh newsprint, which is more sanitary.  Never been used before.  Who knows where those old newspapers had been?

  2. my only guess would be that the texture of the paper absorbs the grease completely without leaving a greasy mess behind.

  3. They have been serving up their fish and chippies in greaseproof paper since it's been in existence, which is a looong time.  If they still use newspaper it is to wrap the outer shell of the inside contents.  They are by no means primitive.

  4. My thought on it. Fish and chip would probably be considered peasant food and certainly street food.  The peddlers of these product would have been poor and looking for free or cheap resources. The news paper is a great container for on the go customers who would have bought the food  on the street so you get the idea. these are my thought, I have no formal training in the subject yet.

  5. Tradition they no longer do I hear.

  6. It was cheap but It hasn't  been for a long time because the print would come off and you could ingest it.

Now they are legally obliged to use to use a plain paper bought in for the purpose.

  7. How should I know I don't live there!?

  8. It used to add somehow to the experience and flavour though!

But somewhat unhygienic as you ended  up with newsprint all over your fingers as you were eating! (with your fingers of course)

  9. As far as I know this practice stopped long ago.  European Union ruling most likely.  Shame,  it gave the fish and chips a lovely flavour, especially if you ate them walking along the seafront.  Those were the days.
