Why is flutamide contraindicated for women?

  1. I think mostly because it is an anti-androgen medication whose use is to block testosterone production in prostatic carcinoma (and women don't have prostate glands).

    I checked and it's listed as Category D for pregnancy, which technically means that there's some evidence that it can cause problems in pregnancy but that it can be indicated if it's decided that the benefits outweigh the risks.  But I just don't know any reason why a woman would be taking it; there might be an off-label use I don't know about.
