Why is food left out in the open smelly while food in the trash usually isnt smelly?

beause it isn't as easy for the particles liberated by decomposition to reach you when their is a barrier, such as a plastic bag between you and it. Much less of the particles contained in a bag reach your senses.

food in the trash is extremely smelly. come over and smell ours, im sure you will agree.

Keeping the food in the fridge keeps it preserved whereas food in the open will continue its natural process of decomposing - thats why its not a good idea to leave food scraps where the smell can waft up easily
