  1. I think its because of the smoking ban - the gov got millions of tax from smokers but now people are quitting they need to find the money elsewhere.  They say its for being green, but everyone knows its just because Labour are skint.

  2. The reason why fuel is so expensive is not because of tax. It is because the price of oil has gone up.

They countries that produce oil are regulated as to how much the can produce/sell so if they are told they can only produce a small amount then they are going to put up the price because there is more demand for it. If they are told they can produce more than they bring the price down per barrel. Fuel tax has not gone up in the last 3/4 years. Although is due to go up this year.

  3. Because Barstewards like yourself keep moaning causing government to keep taxes.

Get a motorbike. They're much more fuel efficient. Or if your still complaining, you can get out and walk in the rain

  4. In Ireland it is €1.34 a litre.

  5. That's easy mate.

    TAX,TAX and more bloody TAX

  6. The fact of the matter is we have a very very week leader in Gordon Brown.

These company's will take the p*ss out of him all day long just like he takes the p*ss out of us.

OK so the fuel goes up in price so why not cut the tax the government have on it to counter this increase its basic math.

After all he is supposed to be our Representative, well he should start representing us  :)

  7. Tax plus VAT on top of it.

I was in OZ in 2004, the exchange rate was about A$2 = £1.00.  I can`t remember the price of diesel but unleaded was .90c and LPG was .34c per litre.

  8. tax

  9. In Australia is it currently hovering around 1.75 aussie dollars a litre (85p and 1.69 american). Get your facts right.

But everything is more expensive in the UK - inflation? Taxes maybe, but the aussie government has a 20 billion dollar surplus now, so I think if anything we tax like h**l here too.

Re additional info: I would, but the travel website doesn't support flights to Sydney from Sydney. b******s. Seriously, I'm an australian motorist, any more up the horse's mouth and it would suffocate. You sure you didn't look at gas? There's three prices on aussie pumps, unleaded, petrol and gas.

  10. Because of your fuel taxes.

  11. Because in England we get shafted and just put up with it whereas if everyone boycotted it the government would have to do something about it!!

  12. I have no idea but in the States (America) its about 40 for 4 litres!!

  13. Because we have a government who's policy is:

Find something that people have to do every day out of necessity and tax them for doing it.

When you've spent all the money, tax them again.

    Repeat as necessary.

  14. It's mostly the tax that makes it so expensive here.

  15. Britain is one of the highest taxing countries in the world. The government, through politicians legitimise exhorbitant taxing of almost any commodity that we buy. The justification to this system has tried to be challenged  but to no avail. After all, those who set these taxes high are the same people who enjoy spending the tax money when we pay taxes. Again in short, we pay a lot on fuel because the government includes a lot of taxes on the price of fuel. Thats full scale capitalism. Daylight robbery.

  16. Blame your government. If you take out the taxes (which make up around 50% of the final cost) then your gas is almost as cheap as ours here in America.

I'm not a big fan of government-induced rationing.

  17. Because the failing economy dictates that they can't drop the tax.

This Government would love to drop the tax as it's one of the few things that might improve it's popularity. The treasury is losing millions a week just from falling house sales failing to produce stamp duty. Add to that companies now closing down with a loss of corporation tax, the employees losing jobs and not paying income tax plus needing unemployment benefit and you start to see the problem.

The people claiming benefits also need paying every week whether the economy can afford it or not. When you have one person claiming £300 per week for the family, that equates to the tax on about 430 litres of fuel at todays prices. The country paid out over £800 million just in false claims last year - that's a h**l of a lot of fuel duty!!

  18. The % of the cost of a Litre of Petrol/Diesel that H.M. Government take in TAX is so HIGH ! Motorists are getting Hacked Off & rightly so I think so ! I can't AFFORD to run a Car anymore ! It is either Shanks' Pony or Public Transport for me !

  19. TAX - to pay for all the money wasted on minority groups.

  20. Petrol costs about 80p a litre in Australia, and if it goes much higher they would be f*cked, as they rely much more heavily on their cars than we do because the public transport there is so poor.

Our prices are so high because of tax, but I suspect you knew that, so... why ask?
