  1. I used my volunteer jobs as references for my first paying job. Also, the volunteer work helped me prepare for the responsibility and need for reliability involved in a paying job.

  2. It can open your eyes to new possibilities in your life.  You have an opportunity to see what is needed in your community, how valuable your contribution of time can make in someones life.  You will see how others live, understand the problems they are facing.  It might just give you another prospective in life, more ideas, new experiences.  Perhaps you will find that you actually love this type of work.

    Best of luck to you.

  3. Well, first of all, you are doing some good, you are being of some use to society.  That alone is a novelty for high school students. 8^)

But beyond that, it gets you out into the world.  You meet people you wouldn't have known existed.  You learn about social problems, which is the reason you're working.  You see how things are.  Anyway that's how it was for me.

I was in college when I did my first volunteer work.  I worked at a kitchen in San Francisco for homeless people called St. Anthony's Dining Room.  I served, I washed dishes, I bussed tables.  I learned about the problem of homelessness first-hand.  For instance, I had no idea homeless people were so POLITE!  I met and talked to a lot of people (mostly hippies) who really cared about homeless people.  I learned where all the food came from.  It was a great experience!

Well then, when you apply to college, they are glad to see that you didn't spend all your high school years in front of a computer.

  4. It takes the focus off of YOU and onto giving back to the community - something kids need.  Also, the more volunteer work you do, the more shot you have at getting into a university - they look at a well-rounded student who is active in several areas, not just academics or sports.

  5. References and experience! I have no education beyond high school and have landed awesome jobs with pure experience and references. If you don't have the experience chances are you'll end up in fast food for your first job just like your mother warned you about...Scaaary...

  6. It displays a fine or keen community spirit. It also highlights that you are already thinking outside of yourself towards others and their needs. The greater the diversity that you gain by volunteering your time and energy the more attractive you appear to prospective future employers and their companies. Keep up the good work and fostering the community spirit.

  7. so that they will realize the importance of helping people even though they are only high school students.,

another is, they can use this in applying job. write in the resume that community service and you will earn points
