Why is gambling on sports illegal outside of las vegas or casinos?

I am from michigan and was wondering if anyone knows of a resource that I can look at to find out the exact reason booking sports is illegal. thanks

I think there is a stigma that sports betting draws shady folks in dark back alleys.  Legal sportsbetting actually discourages all the riff raff!  I think New Jersey has passed a favorable law for sports betting, or it least it will be up for public vote this fall, partly to keep interest in Atlantic City rather than slot halls in PA, casinos in NY state and up in Foxwoods.  I'm sure if a state with casinos was losing revenue to other states, they'd pass sports betting or other gambling laws in general.

The fluff reason is that it threatens the integrity of the sport.  The real reasoning is that gambling makes people poorer, and poorer people tend to commit more blue collar crimes.  

I think thats probably an exaggeration, but its the main arguement against legalized gambling.

Gambling is illegal in Michigan and 49 other states.  It's funny that they have a lottery but the state makes money from that, not the casinos.  Las Vegas has different laws, gambling is legal there.  Cruise ships can have gambling but are not off shore long enough for sporting events.
