  1. The same thing that makes it work in engines.

    It's molecules combine readily with oxygen, releasing substantial heat.  That makes more molecules combine with oxygen faster.  It's volatile (has a low boiling point).  Vapors ignite easier than liquids, more surface area to mix with air.


  2. The structure of its atoms and molecules. That is what causes all chemical properties for all substances.
