This "might" make sense for someone buying a tanker's worth but, for the motorist, REALLY NOW!

  1. good point.  i always thought it was dumb, it seems like an odd way to "trick" people into thinking gas isn't quite as expensive as it is.  i think we all know it's expensive either way, lose the 9/10ths bit, would ya?

  2. To trick people into thinking the price is lower than it really is. Same thing with everything else. A $50 product is always advertised as $49.99 and a $1 product is always advertised as $0.99 and so on.

  3. that way when gas cost $3.99 and 9/10th your really paying $4.00 a gallon for example if it was really just $3.99 for 30 gallons you would pay $119.70 for $3.99 and 9/10ths it $119.97 not a big difference for you but to the gas stations selling millions of gallons it brings in a nice chunk of change

  4. I think because all the pumps are manufactured that way and it would be too expensive to make a change to the assembly line.

  5. its just a scam. its the same thing as those ads on TV offering $19.99. when you first think about it, it doesnt seem the same as when you first see $20.00. it makes the price seem less then it really is

  6. It's for the same reason that no matter where you buy anything, it is always priced at "something and 99 cents"; apparently, the psychological (sales) effect --- for that ONE CENT difference --- is so powerful that retailers are totally resistant to pricing items in just dollars and no cents.

  7. Simple. When you see it it is one cent less and which makes you go to the cheapest even though almost everywhere is the same.

Just remember there is no such thing as 9/10 of a cent

  8. its an "extra" penny the government throws on there to get their money. you dont give it much thought (typically) because its ONE CENT but it all adds up in the governments pockets.
