Why is gatomon a champion while the other ones are rookies?

Because she naturally digivolved into a champion form unlike the other ones who used digivices.

She's just better for the part than Salamon (her Rookie form). Salamon is more like a dog, and just not as cool and elegant; it just doesn't quite suit Kari. I think she's a little more advanced from experience than the others, and with that experience she is able to hold on to her Champion for while the rest are always losing energy. She's better at preserving her energy and using it to kick the enemies' asses.

I know it's really confusing, so here are Gatomon's different Digivolution level:
Baby/Fresh: YukimiBotamon
In-Training: Nyaramon
Rookie: Salamon
Champion: Gatomon
Ultimate: Angewomon
Mega: Magnadramon

People don't usually think of YukimiBotamon as its Baby form, since it was never really said, but YukimiBotamon IS the Fresh form of BlackGatomon and they both Black- and regular Gatomon have the same In-Trainings and Rookies. Another way of looking at it is that YukimiBotamon turns into Nyaramon, who turns into Salamon, who can turn into either Black- or normal Gatomon - what the Baby is has no effect on the matter. Only time will tell whether you're a good little kitty or an evil Virus.
