  1. http://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Mot...

    good page explaining :)

  2. Gin was used to provoke abortions in the 18th/19th centuries, and being so cheap was very useful.

  3. Gin was the drink for the 19th/20th century population, especially women prostitutes who used to frequent the cheap 'gin houses' and many of them were mothers, who's children where on the streets, and they spent a lot of time drunk, therefore 'mothers ruin'.

Also, it was supposed to be a way of getting rid of a 'life' (baby), but whether it worked or not I wouldn't know.

  6. In the 1700's gin was marketed as a medicinal drink; a cure for gout and indigestion and a general tonic as well as a soporific for babies. It was sold in shops, public houses, at market stalls and even in barber shops. it was cheap and made people feel better about their aches and pains for a while, it was also crudely manufactured and highly addictive with the side effects of rendering women infertile and men sterile...women who drank gin regularly often stopped having children and lost the ones they did have because of the gin that was being given to the baby either directly or through the mother's milk.

  7. it explains itself.
