It isn't.  It's an effort conducted by a vast conspiracy of evil scientists to separate the worthy from the unworthy and create a population of only people who can think.  Careful notes are being kept of all the folks who at this late date still fail to "get it".

EVERY major scientific organization has issued an official statement that this is real, and mostly caused by us.  The National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Physics, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Association, etc.
