  1. Ancient Greece is often referred to as the birthplace of Western Euro centric civilization. The Greeks of that period were dedicated to the arts, sciences, politics, warfare, sports, and architecture. They were known for studying in other countries and making their intellectual academies available to students of higher learning. Politically they set up a system of city states with each functioning as autonomous nations. This included commerce as well as warfare. Fortunately the Greeks are more known for their artistic and intellectual legacies than their military exploits

  3. Greece was the first major European civilisation.  The Greeks created some things that were unique and had never been tried before, like democracy for instance (though it was severely limited in scope, nevertheless it was a start).

  4. There were contributing civilizations before and after.

My guess would be good PR job.

  5. Their foundation of government is what future Western governments used as a model.

  6. Under the Greeks we saw the development of...

    1.  Western medicine (Hippocrates and the idea of "first do no harm")

    2.  Drama

    3.  Philosophy (Socrates and Plato were the foundation for all Western philosophical thought).

    4.  Government.  Though the Greeks had kings and slaves, they created the concepts and initial practice of democracy, politics (a greek root word based on "poli" or people).  The concept of a Republic comes from the Greeks.

    5.  Much of initial architecture is derived from the Greeks.

    6.  The epic poems 'The Illiad" and "The Odyssey" have influenced Western Literature since.  Why the film..."Where Art Thou Brother" is basically an updated version of "The Odyssey."
