  1. hay is generally cut 2 times a year. in around late june early july and mid august generally. this is what farmers call first and second crop. first crop is generally an equal measure of grass and alfalfa, while second crop is mostly alfalfa because the heat nad lack of water can prevent the grass from growing back, but the alfalfa has a longer root and can survive the conditions.

  2. Hay is nothing more than a grass  which is cut and bailed. The reason you see it later in the year is probably because of where you live. Grass varieties need warm weather, sun and water to grow well, apparently you are in a northern and cooler climate area.

I was raised in Arizona and in southern Arizona the hay farms will get 7 to 10 cuttings per year from the hay fields, meaning the grass is growing fast enough to reach a cutting height of 12 to 16 inches 7 to 10 times in each growing season. The first cuttings in that area of the country will occur as early as May and continue into late October.

  3. Because it should have time to grow.

  4. hay is produced in spring, summer, and fall, because it is the growing season for grasses, here in Texas where I live in the southeast part of the state we get 4 to 5 cuttings per year depending on weather conditions. There have been times when I have gotten more cuttings and times when I have got less cuttings but i usually average 4-5 and that is with the grass at a good height
