  1. Because of the imposition of religious indoctrination and it's influence instilled in societal structure for centuries.

  2. It's so complex because the physical and emotional aspects of sexuality are as varied as humans themselves.  Every culture has a different rule, and every human will choose their own value.  Some women can't o****m, others can have multiple orgasms in succession.  Some men can't o****m either, or do so very quickly, others can last and last.

Some people think s*x is very special to be shared only with the person you love or marry.  Some think it is ok to sleep with many people for the sharing aspect or for fun or because they like the feeling.  Some look on s*x as a purely physical pleasure.  Some choose to repress it completely or remain celibate.  Some believe you should only have s*x if you intend to procreate.  Some don't believe in certain forms of protection.  And some have all or most of their sexuality taken from them due to physical or mental problems.  Some think that s*x with the same gender is perfectly fine, others abhor homosexuality in any form.  And some choose to change their gender via highly sophisticated medical operations...or simply to remove themselves completely from gender classification (what about the recent story about the pregnant man!)

And people have so many different definitions of what "s*x" is and when it is or is not appropriate (look at the recent fiascos with Lewinski and Clinton, or with Spitzer and Dupre!).

And some, even when they know it is NOT appropriate, choose to take the risk and do it anyway.

This just scratches the surface.  As you can see, there are literally hundreds or thousands of variables that factor in when you consider sexuality.  And it's simply not possible to get two people together where ALL the variables are going to match up with each other.

And as with any social difference, this can sometimes lead to conflict...because values are so varied that no two people can ever have exactly the same set of them.
