Why is it, in movies, you see a man in a ticket booth and then someone rings a bell and the guy behind the..?

counter pops straight up from under the counter with like a cat or a small dog? What the h**l is he doing under there? Like a motel clerk, he always pops straight up from the ground..What is that? Does he live like a troll under that counter? What?

really good question.  you are right though. what the h**l are they doing?  just kind of corny I guess.  Just one of those things that movies do without even thinking about it I guess.  really perceptive.

I worked behind the front desk at a motel for a short time and I never was below counter level! ! !

I did use to go behind the wall into the office so I could sit down, when the bell would ring I would come from behind the wall!  Similar?  They wouldn't let us have a chair or stool behind the counter we had to be standing.  The worse part was the outfit I had to wear, pink shirt with a hideous tie! ! !
