Why is it BAD LUCK to spill salt?

dear, there is no answer to this its all just based on mere superstition, i have spilled salt and what not sooo many times but never experienced bad luck

This superstition harkens back to the dark ages when salt was mainly used for food preservation.  And it was EXTREMELY expensive, "worth it's weight in gold".

So, it became bad luck to spill your precious salt.
