If you go to online they charge you £23, instead of the normal price of about £7. Are we being conned.

  1. Yes. Go to your town hall in the town of your birth for an OFFICIAL one. Any certificate other than this is illegal.

  2. You're going to the wrong site, clearly.  Certificates should only be ordered through the government agency the General Register Office (GRO) at www.gro.gov.uk, and they do cost £7 with the proper references.  It is actually to cheaper to order online than it is to use the post or telephone service.  I can only assume you're using one of those dodgy third-party sites that charge upwards of £20 for their services.  You're not the first and you won't be the last to get conned like this into paying over the odds for a certificate ordering service.  The lesson here is don't click on the first google link you see and always use the official GRO website.  And by the way, this question would get better responses if it was placed in the Arts & Humanties / Genealogy category.

  3. I just checked on the website for the town I was born in & it said £7 to buy online ?

    where are you looking

Edit: are you on an official site or one where they will go & get it for you & send it on ?

  4. Yes you are..

  5. Because they have to pay people to sort through and process the online applications i guess .... :)
