Because far too many people want to make a large impression on other people.  I think that this is foolish.  I love the fact that some of these idiots are now so far into debt that they can not afford their house or their cars.  I worked for a Chief Engineer who has lived in the same house since he was married and hasn't seen the need to get a bigger house as he moved up the ladder.  He also drives a chevy metro that is paid for.  People like him are the ones that I look up to.

we work hard because that is what you do in a productive society, i guess i could claim welfare and have the taxpayers support me, but i enjoy the feeling i get from being self sufficient.

as far as the high mortgage rates those were individuals that were buying more house than they could afford. when the initial purchase was done the vaiable rate was lower than the fixed rate allowing them to think they could afford more house, when they could not. then the interest rates increased and since they had a variable rate their payment increased.
