  1. most dessert prey comes out at night to escape preditors and da heat during the day. its pitch black in da dessert so infered helps snakes see the warth generating from its prey.

  7. If by infrared you meant the heat seeking pits then it is to distinguish between prey and not prey.  between say a hummock of grass and a field mouse.  The advantage is they get to eat.
