  1. Its not. Some idiot made up some rubbish about it hurting their eyes, which, as i said, is rubbish. Of course, commonsense prevails, its fine in moderation, i wouldn't be letting them watch it for hours (which i cant imagine a 2 year old would stay still for that long anyway, i know my 1 year old doesn't!!) but you wouldn't let your child watch the TV for hours no matter their age, anyway.

  2. in moderation it should be okay. Studies have shown though that putting your child in front of the tv at a young age could cause them to be glued to it more at teenagers. With child obesity climbing i would be cautious.

  3. I don't think it is bad for them to watch tv - just depends on what you have them watching. All of my kids have grown up watching teletubbies, barney, etc. and my 8 yr old is in the gifted program, my 6 yr old will be tested for it this year, and my 2 yr old can hold a better conversation with you then most grown ups. It all depends on what they are watching and how much time you spend with them teaching them things.

  4. It's okay if it's limited but children that age learn mainly through play and they need a lot of physical activites because they are still building gross motor skills so every minute they are watching TV are minutes that you are taking away from their learning and physical development. If you want your child to learn the ABC's don't sit them in front of sesame Street to learn them...your child will get so much more by having you sit and play games in person that help them learn them. Then your child is not only gaining the knowledge of the ABC's but they are also getting the human contact and most children learn more by doing than by watching.

  5. I don't think it is bad for children.  TV is obviously not a baby sitter!  It can, however be a valuable teaching tool.  Similar things could be said about the interned for older children. Of course I spend hours playing with my child, but television can serve as another type of toy.

My little baby doesn't watch TV, but he has a favorite movie, Meet the Robinsons.  At first he just loved watching the bright colors and movement which is very good for new babies.  Now as he's getting a little bigger, there are moments that he will be playing with a toy and then look up to a musical part or an exciting part and watch intently.

(BTW, this is the ONLY movie he enjoys.)

I believe that from watching this movie, he is learning sounds and speech patterns that differ from his parents.  He is also learning to anticipate the next sequence which not only develops his memory, but helps his logic.  (If part A has happened, and part B is now, part C is coming)

***I don't think we need to be afraid of technology warping our children into mindless blobs.  Only neglegence can do that!

  6. At age two and under children are just beginning to learn things about right and wrong, and television can have an unsubtly great affect on a child at that impersonable age.

  7. because they could play and learn and do so many things other than sitting passively and watching some faces who relate to nobody.

  8. There is nothing wrong with it.

The only problem is that it's a waste of time.

A child at that age should be learning through interacting with their environment. Sitting in front of the TV teaches almost nothing and should only be used for recreation or relaxation.

  9. Lots of reasons. One is that they can not distinguish between fantasy and reality. Another is that they have no idea what the purpose of any of what they're watching is. They can not distinguish between commercials and entertainment or between news and comedy. They are being "talked at" and they are being made completely susceptible to and by anyone doing the talking. The images are made to intrigue them and they have no method for blocking out the ones that are disturbing or harmful or unnecessary. Also,. their time should be spent doing things that are of benefit to them rather than sitting idly and watching the boob tube. Exercise, reading, playing, singing, dancing, talking, frolicking, interacting with live people are all far better than sitting and watching tv. A small amount of time -- when supervised as to what is being watched -- is probably harmless but, endless hours of watching tv is definitely bad for everyone and especially for young kids.
