Question:

Why is it bad luck to give away your own hair?

It's something I've always wondered. I'm in a long-term relationship and my boyfriend keeps giving me hand-made gifts, so I thought it would be nice if I made him something by hand that included a lock of my hair (in a tasteful way of course). Anywho, I mentioned this to my hairdresser, and she told me to put the idea out of my mind, because giving someone else your hair is very bad luck. She never said why, though. I'm not superstitious, but superstition, beliefs, curses etc. fascinate me.

Have you ever heard of such a superstition? Do you know why it's bad luck to give away your hair? What's supposed to happen if you do?

All input is appreciated!!

  1. Comes from the fact that witches use hair in their spells ( sympathetic magic).

    Voodoo uses it as well.

  2. Maybe because if he has your hair he can make a voodoo doll or put a spell/curse on you that or the simple fact that you are p[hysicaly giving away a part of yourself? Seems silly to me though.

  3. It ties to another person. They would have something of you, something that came from you.

  4. No, such a superstition doesn't exist. These are the recent ones..just released! lol

Did you know? You can donate you hair to recovering cancer patients to help them after their chemotherapy treatment. Cancer patients loose their hair during and after the treatment.

This hair given away by these people are of a big advantage to these recovering patients. So, its rather a boon than an object of bad luck. It helps them get back to normal life, not destroy them. So, if they can give away their hair not bring bad luck to themselves or their patients, it's not gonna harm ou either. I don't think the superstition was created for you alone. (by the poor hairdresser)

It wouldn't bring any mis-fortune to the 2 of you (you and your guy) That's my word. And I love your imagination! You guys are a good pair. Hand made gifts for eachother....nice indeed :)

  5. When I went to an all Indian school in Kansas some of the girls went as far as cleaning their brushes after every use and burning their hair in an ashtray. It is believed that someone can put bad medicine on you using your hair. As far as wearing someone else's hair such as in a locket it is believed that you can share in some of the negative energy's of that person.

  6. Your hair can be used against you in spells and such, so you are giving someone possible control over you by surrendering a lock of your hair to them.

BTW, the same goes for toenail clippings.

  7. i have never heard that

  8. Actually, it's ACCEPTING a lock of hair that's supposed to be bad luck. Why? Because! It's just a baseless superstition, like meeting a red-haired person first thing in the morning is bad luck, or carrying flowers on an airplane is bad luck, or your ears burning means someone is talking about you, or lunar eclipses bring bad luck. There is no reason behind it.

  9. your hairdresser reckons that your bf will be turned off if he sees your split ends

  10. Your hairdresser is full of it.  Its not "bad luck" at all.

  11. Voodoo.
