  1. I've heard that when an overland phone line is hit by lightning, the cracking in the receiver may be strong enough to damage your eardrum - no idea if this is true, and I don't really want to find out!

  2. lightning striking telephone wire. will travel in phone lines

  3. Your parents are correct because the metal wiring of the telephone lines conduct electricity very well and should a lightning bolt strike your house, or a connected power line outside your home, you will likely be electrocuted if you were using a corded telephone. Note that only corded (wired) phones are dangerous because they are connected to the wiring. Phones that have no cords attached to them are perfectly safe to use during lightning storms, provided that all other safety precautions are followed.

Anything that is corded or has water flowing through it should not be used during a thunderstorm. If you know a thunderstorm is approaching you, disconnect/un-plug electronics from the outlets to avoid damaging them if a lightning bolt struck your house. Wait for the storm to go by before resuming your regular activities.
