Shouldn't they have called Savannah, Georgia Atlanta instead because it's close to the ocean? And then called Atlanta something different because it's relatively far away from the ocean?

  1. It is named after the mythical Greek girl who ran a race but slowed to pick up golden apples, not after the ocean.

  2. it was the shortened word for the atlantica-pacifica railroad

  3. Savannah was the first city discovered in Georgia. It was named after the Savannah river. I see why you would have that logic though. Here is some more info:

Savannah was established on February 12, 1733 when General James Oglethorpe founded Georgia. The city was named for the Savannah River, a local waterway. Oglethorpe carefully planned the city's streets by using a grid pattern with 24 park-like squares. Savannah has the distinction of being the first city in the state of Georgia.

There are numerous attractions in Savannah to increase cultural awareness and make Savannah the "Hostess City of the South". Savannah is home to a National Historic Landmark District of 2.5 square miles, and more than 1,100 architecturally significant buildings. The Victorian District is one of the nation's largest collections of that period's architecture.

  4. It's that way because Atlanta was probably named after a person, not the ocean.  The stories have it that it was a variation of the name of a lady named Martha Atalanta Lumpkin.
