Sydney is hosting World Youth Day next week however it's running from Tuesday to Sunday. Why didn't they call it World Youth Week as it's obviously longer than a day?

  1. The official World Youth Day is Sunday 20th July where the pilgrims and anyone else interested gets to have mass with the pope. Apparently World Youth Day was originally held on Palm Sunday in 1986 and has been celebrated on a Diocesan level every Palm Sunday ever since. Every three years or so, it goes to an international host city, like this year in Sydney.

I would imagine they continue to call it World Youth DAY because it keeps the continuity of the event branding and represents the final mass day, regardless of the activities during the week.

  2. I wondered that myself....maybe the pope only comes out for one day. Plus it would suck if everyone came over for a day then it was all over.

  3. Because organised religion is founded on contradictions, they're just throwing it in there to pull the wool over the sheeps eyes YET AGAIN

  4. because the abbreviation wyd is better than the abbreviation wyw

  5. I went there, it was  in Paris 1997. Anyway We did alot of church things but it was only one night to morning (everyone who went to WYD) camped out at this race track, where we met pope John Paul for the 1st and only time we'd see him the whole trip.  I'd say maybe that's why because it's only one day with the pope
