Why is it called like this?

why is 'hot dog' called like this? is there any reason for the sandwich being called 'hot dog'? what is it?

It's not the sandwich that's called a dog.  It's the dog it's self.  You put the dog in a bun.  Why is a Rueben called a rueben and not a corned beef sandwich?  Monti Cristo?????
