Why is it difficult to collect census date in less economically developed countries? (L.E.D.C's)?

  1. It depends on the country of course.  But I had a difficult time in Southern Africa because tribal people didn't want to disagree with a white man.  You could ask for directions and they'd say it was west, but if you said you thought it was east, they would agree with you.  So you never knew.  In some countries there is a very developed secret police system and so they will never say anything they think the government might not like.  There are often rules over who may live where, so they will not admit to having more people in the house than is permitted.  Then there is the remoteness in some areas, language barriers, illegal economy and desire to seem more poor because they think they will get aid.

    The main reason is that people who are so poor that they have trouble finding food to feed their families think that any government that spends time collecting data instead of helping its people directly is idiotic and corrupt, so why should you bother giving some government flunky the time of day.  What difference does it make to you?
