  1. Th website link below will help to explain why.  (Basically, less wear and tear on the body, and it's easier to cross over and learn new swimming strokes.)

(P.S.  Don't read it if you're a Phelps fan.  The article explains, correctly, why he's not as great as everyone thinks he is.)

  2. Because they are much more medals in swimming compared to other sports.

  3. more events.

  4. you can get like 15 gold medals in swimming

  5. Each individual race counts as a different race because of differences in distance and strokes.  That makes a total of 34 swimming gold medals to be handed out.  However, the similarities between a 100m freestyle and a 100m breaststroke still is extremely similar compared to 100m dash and 110m hurdles.  Systematically, not all medals are created equal, which is why all of the debates of which country is the greatest because they have the most medals or whatever silly system they come up with is flawed by default.

It doesn't matter for the Olympics because no country is awarded anything for having the most l337 medal points.  But due to the relatively subtle differences between the races and the sheer amount of medals handed out for them, it is much easier for Michael Phelps to win 8 gold medals than it is for an entire volleyball team to win 8 gold medals.
