The weather is like a big battle between the cold from the north and the hot from the south (well, up here in the northern hemisphere anyway).  The air masses kind of move like the blobs in a lava lamp.  Every so often a big blob of cold breaks off from the polar area and migrates toward the equator.  When this happens, the big cold air mass can push the warm air away, and you'll get a sudden change to cold for a few days, until the warm air comes back and pushes the cold away.
