Why is it illegal to drive with your tailgate down on your truck?

I didn't know that it was. Maybe it obscures your rear license plate, or it might be a safety issue - someone might not see it and hit it.

It's not illegal here either, but it can get you pulled over and checked out. Because with the tailgate down they can't see the tag. And you might be driving with the gate down to hide an expired plate. So they will pull you over to check out your tag.

my dad works at the police deparment and he said he never heard of a law that you cant have your tailgate down when your driving i live in minnesota maybe that why?
