  1. It is illegal to possess a human skeleton or to transport human remains unless you have proper documentation citing the source of these materials.

This is to prevent grave robbing, "pot hunting," taking trophies during war, and (duh!) murder.  Skeletons that are in classrooms and laboratories are supposed to have papers that show their source.

Many older skeletons were obtained through nefarious methods - even those found in legitimate settings.  Under NAGPRA, any skeleton of Native American origin must be repatriated to the tribe of origin.

Most of the skeletons in our university laboratory were purchased from India.  This is legal, but morally questionable.  When a person dies in India, they are often placed in the Ganges River.  People of the"untouchable" caste then collect these bodies downstream and clean the bones for sale to Western universities.  We don't purchase these remains anymore, so our bones are in pretty bad shape.

  9. Well, where did you get it?  Did you kill someone?  Did you rob a grave?  Did you rob a morgue?  Can you think of a way to acquire a skeleton that doesn't require breaking some laws?

  11. I'm not sure why it's illegal, maybe it's more

moral standards and church religion that make

it hard to acquire one or two..If it was a relatives
