Why is it important for Probation Officers to have a good understanding of research and research methods?

Because probation officers are often confronted with novel situations that require resolution only through research - one of the most prevalent examples are the circumstnaces under which a person (having a particular physiqe and using specific medication) will test (+) for ilicit substances.

So they can help their probationers with their homework.

It is important for several reasons.  A lot of times, a PO has to verify information given to them by, and about their offenders.  As a PO,I have spent a lot of time researching different drugs, both illegal and prescription.  I also have researched different mental health illnesses.  If I have a client, for example, who is cutting herself, I would want to know about that so I would be better able to help her or at least refer her to the appropriate place for help.  There is also a lot of research in finding out a persons criminal history.  This may include many phone calls to different states and agencies.  I also have done a lot of research if my clients come in with a problem that they may have.  I have researched grief issues and counseling, domestic violence and women's shelters, financial assistance for medications, drivers license issues, you name it, I have looked into it!
