Why is it important that a fork has split your English muffin?

I see on the packages where it says "fork split". Why?

  1. tx2 is right ,  to preserve the 'nooks and crannies' as they say


  2. yes tx2 is right - it's to keep all the pores of the muffin open so the butter, or whatever you put on it can really get into it.

  3. So you dont have to cut them.

  4. I suppose because a knife might flatten out the craters inside;  and a fork would just go through them and keep the "holey" texture of the muffin......
