    Actually, the two lakes are connected by the the Erie Canal.

  3. Actually the two lakes are connected by the Niagara River primarily.  The Erie canal is anthropogenic.

    And it allows drainage towards the eastern continent, this provides water for the east in large quantities as well as transportation into the interior (however transportation was not direct) and canals had to be built.  If Erie never flowed into Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence would be a much smaller river with massively reduced flow and Canada likely wouldn't have been explored when it was.
