Why is it important that we know where the epicenter of an earthquake is?

i am writing a research paper for a geology class (due tommorow) on how we locate the epicenter of an earthquake, but i'm having trouble answering why finding the epicenter is important...

Any ideas? thanks i'll appreciate it

THe epicenter is above the earthquakes start point. in order to find where the earthquake came from we need to find the start of the earthquake using a seismograph and then looking at the esrts <3

I am only in 10th grade but I do want to become a geologist someday. I believe that the epicenter is where the seismic waves brake the surface of the earth.The epicenter is usually the place that the most damage occurs and then it slowly dies out as it travels outwards. I am sure this information could be used in some way to determine the focus, what type of seismic wave has occurred, or used in further research of earthquakes, seismic waves, prediction and that sort of stuff. Sorry I'm not an expert, but that might give you some ideas.

We need to know where an epicentre of earthquake was because of predicting future earthquakes. Also to find out what is cosed that earthquake and to seek damage that earthquake cosed.

When earthquake happened (two earth tectonics hit each other) the area above is epicentre of earthquake and there is earthquake have stronger  impact. The earthquake Wave then spread in circle around the epicentre in all direction but effect of earthquake is weaking during the mileage. The farthest you go the weaker is earthquake.

This effect is similar to when you trow rock in still water, the point where the rock touches the water is epicentre, and then earthquake spread in waves around epicentre becoming more and more weak.

I would guess it is because we track earthquakes and collect data on them in order to better predict future quakes.

I found a good report on earthquakes that you may be able to use some of the information, but of course you will need to give her credit.
