  1. A lot of flush type mounted lights are only tested and approved for a certain amount of heat dissipation - they will have a label indicating the maximum wattage of the unit - there is a risk of fire if this recommendation is exceeded.

  2. Heat is the main factor. If the bulb has a higher rating than the socket the possibility of over heating is very likely. This can become a fire hazard . Many socket come with a warning label indicating the maximum power the socket can hold.

  3. this one is simple, the higher the watts, the more current or amps that will flow through the contacts. when they build the socket, they take this into consideration. so the more current makes it hot and the potential for fire greater.

  4. It is always proper to check the power rating of a bulb and a socket. If improperly matched, the socket may fail prematurely.

  5. The bulb rating determines the amount of power being used. If you use a bulb which is rated higher than the socket, then more power is being used that the socket is designed to handle. This could result in overheating(fire), or could cause the bulb to burn out faster.
