  1. Role in what?  In work, it's because of changes in technology, law and the skills expected. However I have noticed that employers don't necessarily respect those who try too hard in these areas.  In other roles, it is surely because as humans we enjoy challenges and have a need to develop and to "better" ourselves.  This should be relevant at work as well, but for many of us it is not.  I do hope someone else answers who can tell you positive things about developing yourself at work - I unfortunately cannot.

  2. If we choose to attempt to rely on our reputation, rather than continually updating and refining our skill set, we will quickly find ourselves out of the loop.

Instead of the corner office, we can quickly be deposed to the broom closet of irrelevancy if we allow our skills to erode.

  3. All to do with the greater advancment of mankind or something like that.
