Why is it important to use low flame when evaporating water from a recovered filtrate?

  1. hmmm, if you are using something small like a test tube as I did, the heat can splatter the water everywhere as well as the filtrate (or precipitate). The idea is not to boil rapidly


  2. It's so the water won't spatter.  Also the hotter it is the more the salt will fly everywhere when the water is fully evaporated(assuming you are evaporating salt water)

    Did a lab like this today(salt water and sand through filter paper, then evaporate the saltwater till you have salt left behind)

    Just wondering, did you use forceps when handling the evaporating dish?  I had to at first, but it got to hot, I dropped it, and it fell to the floor and shattered(then melted to the floor).
