Question:

Why is it inadvisable to keep a 2.4 GHz cordless phone next to a TV set?

I recently bought a 2.4 GHz cordless phone and it said in the manual that it is not advisable to keep the cordless phone next to a TV. Why is that? We also have a microwave oven, which is less than 20 feet away and we find no disturbances. The thing about keeping the phone next to the TV is that since the TV is in the middle of the house, we can get uniform range. Now, the phone is in a room at the front part of the house and the moment we go to the back, it says Out Of Range and starts beeping. Can we shift the phone next to the TV without damaging the TV or the phone? Please help.

  1. You will not damage the tv or the phone.

The problem is radio frequency interference (RFI).  The phone's intermediate frequency (IF) is in the same band as your TV's receiver.  That may cause your phone to interfere with the TV's reception.  However, as most TV's today are used as cable-connected monitors as opposed to VHF receivers, this is rarely an issue.

I'd set the phone where you want.  If it interferes with the TV, then move it a couple of feet away from the TV until it stops.
