I am doing a case study for my Pre-med class, in which I am trying to diagnos a patient, and I have found the sickness to be fifth disease, but one of the questions on my paper asks why it is necessary to check the throat. What purpose does checking the throat serve?

  1. depends on what you mean by check, as in look in the back of the mouth or feel the neck area to check for swollen glands.  Either way its part of ruling out the other illnesses.

  2. You'd probably want to make sure that you had differentiated Fifth Disease vs. some other illnesses that start with a rash, e.g., Chicken Pox or Rubella (Measles).

Also, always important to check throat... ABCs dictate check airway always!
