Why is it necessary to exercise care when placing mechanical materials on moving equipement?

What on earth are "Mechanical materials" as opposed to materials.  From a glancing search, I see one scholarly article using the term in a title but not within the text, which refers to micromechanical devices. But i've hardly come across the terms elsewhere.

I see Nottingham university uses the term but can't decide where to place the comma...[1]

So with that background in mind who knows, perhaps they are:

*brittle

*fragile

*subject to fracture from torques when placed in interface with the moving equipment.

*are so d**n small you can't find them after they are placed on moving equipment.... who knows :-)!

*Generate noise in terms of voltage/current from piezo effects in a measurement scenario (if these are just mems).
