  1. Who came up with a tip minimum? Why should a server that brought me a single plate and one tea refill for a 10 dollar lunch, get less than a server that brought me a single plate and two tea refills that cost me 20 dollars because it is a nicer restaurant?

I feel servers need to unionize and at least get minimum wage, so I do not have to feel bad for not tipping because as stated before my service could be bad due to problems in the restaurant environment, like short-handed on the floor or in the kitchen.

  2. I am going to assume that because this is in the Vancouver section that you are Canadian.  In Canada it is law that employees receive minimum wage from their employers which in BC I'm not sure what it is but here in NS it is $7.15.  So they are getting paid just as much as the gas pumper, the teller at the grocery store, the McDonalds guy flipping burgers, and on.  So servers are by no means "poor" compared to other workers.  So, I feel really bad for those of you in the US who are not afforded the same respect.

Anyways, I agree whole heartedly (and I was hardworking waitress for 4 years) that tips are earned.  You are paying for the service, not the quality of the food or the atmosphere in the restaurant.  now some places work differently.  some places "pool" their tips and waiters, dishwashers, hostesses, busboys, etc. all get a chunk.  the restaurant I worked at was small and I kept everything that was left for me.  So try to be concious of this when deciding how much you are tipping.  Standard in Canada is 15% or the same as the tax in provinces like NS.  Just use your common sense and if you enjoyed yourself tip and if you didn't, don't tip.

  3. It's not "necessary", it's customary.

15% is the standard.  20% is for really good.  10% is for less than adequate.

1 cent is for extremely poor service.  Don't just leave nothing, they'll think "you forgot".  Once cent, face down let's them know they sucked.

  4. I go dating and I usually look at tipping habits of the guys I go out with. 10% of the full amount is a good enough deal for a tip. If you want more tips on dating and dining and tipping or getting tipsy why not just hook up with people on webdatedotcom? It's sure to be fun!

  5. servers don't get paid that much so they depend on their tips for the majority of their income. A good rule for tipping is one dollar for every five dollars of the meal.

  6. 15% for average service

    20% for excellent service

$1.00 for every other mixed drink

    .50/beer

In the US waiters are paid somewhere around 3.00 and hour, they are working for their tips.  If you don't want food or drinks  brought to you, then stay at home and deal with it all yourself.  Just know that is part of going out to eat.

  7. It is good to tip because the wait staff only makes $3.00 an hour as a base pay.

If the waitor/waitress was attentive I leave 20%.

    Average service 15%

Lousy service 10% if they are lucky

  8. Pretend it was you and their shoes you would want a tip as well and a good amount is 2.00 being the minimum.

  9. It isn't necessary. It is a Tip. If the service is bad you don't leave a tip . 15% is good 20% is for very good service..Lunch or dinner.

  10. It is not necessary, however...  They make $2.10 an hour based on the fact that MOST people tip because the server is "serving" you...  If it is good service 15% Exceptional service 20% or higher, if they suck and dont "serve" you to your expectations, tip $.01.  It will jar their brain to think, "Wow, what did I do wrong?"  (Plus they will call you a dirty name or two..."

  11. every waitperson I've ever known is paid minimum wage (maybe it's just in California) of $6.75 per hour plus tips.  I agree with tipping, and usually leave 20% (standard is 15%), I've even left $40 tip for a $70 check before,  but I do believe that a tip needs to be earned.  And simply carrying my food out and taking my order is simply doing your job a tip is a gratuity...a thank you for a job well done.  If you come by my table and make sure my glass is filled (even better is if I don't have to ask to have it filled).  Big plus is you are friendly with my kids.  I've had servers who act like they are doing ME a favor or seem completely put out when I ask for something....bad tip.

  12. usually 10% man unless its like a fast food place then just give a S****y tip

  13. Just double the tax. That's a good way to tip. I always tip 20% though, but for those that aren't sure, doubling the tax usually works.

  14. Waiters dont get paid much because they get tips so basically the tips are their income. Basic tip is 15% - 20%, remember they are just making a living , just like everyone else so dont forget to tip your waiter even the basic for service that you are not happy with, remember sometimes it may not be their fault that they are short handed or if the kitchen is making food slow or if they have to wait in line to use a computer or wait for the bartender to make your drinks, they are usually doing the best they can because its their income.

  15. I'm a server in New Jersey.  20% is minimum.  Anything less is not only insulting, it also makes us feel horrible, even though we know we did a good job.  This means even if we only took your order and got your drinks.  At my restaurant, I have to tip out 25% of what I make between the food runner, the bartender and the bussers.

We make 2.13 an hour and ALL of that plus some goes to taxes.  Our paychecks are usually $0.00, maybe, sometimes 4 dollars for 40 hours of work.

Also realize the amount of time your taking at a table and how large your group is.  I usually make around 400 on a Saturday night.  This past weekend, one party took my entire section and sat there for 4 HOURS.  Then they actually had the nerve to tip me 13.5%.  Thanks for that 50 dollars that I have to split with another server and tip out.  I walked with 11 dollars for a Saturday night and now I can't pay my rent thats coming up.  Those people were very inconsiderate.

For the most part, at our restaurant, we usually make about 30%.  We only get crappy tips from people that live outside of California, New Jersey and New York.

  16. at least 20%

  17. It is not required to tip, however an average tip should be 15% of the bill or what you paid in tax. a good tip can be larger and also if you are leaving cash a penny can be added on top of the bill left as a show of good service. HOWever do not leave a penny by itself it shows poor ettiquitte leaving nothing at all instead if service was poor.

  18. Why would you expect a server to wait on you hand anf oot for free? Servers make 90% of their income on tips alone. They're only paid 2.13 or 2.15 an hour, usually. So, tipping them 15% would be courteous and respectful for them taking the time out to commit to your satisfaction. I can't TELL you how many times I got pissed off because I labored hard for people and they didn't even tip me. That's like working 9 hours and only getting paid for 2!

  19. will if you want good services when you go back that resturant again you should tip the waitress or waiter by at least 15%. Servicers in resturants don't get paid a lot and that tip you give them helps them to live. So 15% is okay.

  20. Thats part of the waiter salary and it about 10% tip depend on what ordered.
