  1. It's peat that's not environmentally friendly, not compost.

Peat comes from peat bogs, which are destroyed when the peat is removed.

    Compost is rotted organic matter.

  2. Not quite true - not all composts are equal!  Compost based on Peat is not ecologically sounds as it require the destruction of habitat thats irreplaceable.

Compost based on waste products such as coconut fibre, chocolate husk etc or Worm cast is ecological as its using waste material.

but best of all is your own HOme made stuff as as well as reusing waste material you're not transporting it 1000's of miles to be used.

COmpost is good, locally made is best but Peat based stuff is BAD

  3. the reason is probably a mix of transport costs etc and also that a lot of compost used peat from peat bogs which are now protected.

  4. when veg rots it releases co2

  5. Home made compost is the most eco friendly stuff to grow in.

It not only provides good nurishment for the plants, but provides habitat for insects and worms.

I have 2 large bins that keep me going all year round, they are always full of big red worms.

The birds love it when I've done he garden and the insects attract birds and hedgehogs.

I produce quite alot of the stuff but if you do buy it, not so good for the environment due to the logistics, but if it is from a local source, that's ok.
