Why is it not ok to wear contacts when taking a shower?

My eye doctor told me that I shouldn't wear my contacts when I sleep, take a shower, or swim.

I know what happens when you sleep with them and I dont suggest anyone to try. Just picture very dry contacts or you are missing one because it is almost in the back of your head! yes that has happened to me.

What I would like to know is:

Why should I not wear my contacts when taking a shower? I've done it before and nothing happened.

  1. Maybe if you take really hot showers - they would get dry from the steam and you'd have problems w/ them then?

I always take showers in my contacts and never really have problems.

  2. if water gets behind them they fall off

  3. it's just because they don't want you to get water in your eyes or under your contacts. i guess it could irritate them.

i think that's sort of ridiculous...i've been wearing contacts since i was 13 (i'm 20 now) and i always shower in them, and i've not had any problems.

just don't stick your wide-open eyes into the stream of the shower and you should be fine, lol.

  4. the only reason is cuz they can fall out if water gets under them

  5. Probably because you can easily get shampoo in your eyes in the shower...and it hurts when it gets in your eyes and you've got contacts in...but we've all done it...

Don't ever sleep in them though...it's a pain in the ***
