Question:

Why is it not pedestrian friendly everywhere?

I live in a rural area and now more and more people are walking instead of driving for shorter trips, but the road doesn't have a sidewalk or even a shoulder so it's very dangerous to them when I drive by if a car is in the other lane I can't move over for them. Do you think we should make those roads more pedestrian friendly?

  1. no you just slow down until the other car has passed. how can a road not have a shoulder.

  2. This may be because of their upbringing. No one is born mean and unfriendly, so therefore this must mean that they were socialized that way.

This means that they learn to be this was through their environment, surrounding and possibly training. For example, being in school.

Children can learn to become rude and unfriendly just by learning the way their friends act, or possibly by the way the teacher acts towards a class.

People can get socialized and influenced to become mean by agents of their socialization, for example family.

A family can definitely influence you to become mean, even by not doing it on purpose.

This is because you can copy the way they act, what they say and how they say it. So a child can learn to become racist by the way the parents may act towards colored people, or what they say about certain people.

So if you know a person who is AWFULLY rude, its probably because of the way the atmosphere at home is like, for example, the parents swear at random and yell and smoke in front of their children and dont care what they do or because of the friends the person hangs out with... or even just TV!!!

    There are many reasons,

  3. logicalg gave a good answer.  Naturally, it would be very expensive to widen every road, and rural roads generally are very lengthy compared to the number of pedestrians on them, so poor return for the investment....

Don't forget, though, that pedestrians *always* have the right of way.  If your driving is making it "very dangerous for them", you are at fault - not they.

It's just something with which you need to learn to live (country boy speaking).  Stop behind the pedestrians if necessary and wait for an "opening".  You're responsible if something unfortunate happens...

  4. Q. why is it not pedestrian friendly everywhere?

    A. (1) Cost of sidewalk installation and maintenance, removing snow from sidewalks, replacing segments that get lifted by tree roots, etc. (2) If the street was originally only one lane in each direction, then the right-of-way is not wide enough for the government to install a sidewalk or shoulder without purchasing more land.

    Q. Do you think we should make those roads more pedestrian friendly?

    A. Yes.  We should.

  5. Live in NYC.  Over 99% of the streets have sidewalk.  But then again it kind of sucks here (nasty people).

    Good Luck...

  6. If you see that you are approaching a pedestrian/cyclist/skateboarder, etc., and there is a vehicle coming towards you, then just slow down so that the oncoming vehicle passes you before you approach those pedestrians/cyclists/skateboarders, etc.

Also, pedestrians should be walking facing traffic on rural roads, or where there are no sidewalks/pathways.It would cost a lot of money to build sidewalks along every rural road, which is taken from your family's taxes causing your taxes to increase and I don't think you want that.............
