Question:

Why is it not possible?

To change our political system so that a democrat and a republican could run side by side? Or any political party? Wouldn't that be the best way to try to bring our country together, instead of keeping this partisan divide amongst ourselves?

Seems to me with the game politics has become for the politicians, that might put an end to some of the c**p we have to endure during elections...and after. Party shouldn't matter as much as it does.

What do you think? Any other ideas on how we can correct the current system?

  1. Two party system is the best thing that can happen to a democracy. One party rule will easily lead to dictatorship. I think US should be proud of its great democratic legacy.

  2. No, that is not a good idea at all.

Political parties are two organizations with very different beliefs as to what direction the country should go.  Politics do not work like a fantasy football team.  You cannot take the best players from each "team" and expect them to preform well.

When this country first started the Vice President was elected into office by being the second place candidate in the Presidentail election.  This always lead to the VP being of a different political party than the Pres.  This caused MANY problems because neither could agree on anything.  This system you are suggesting has already been tried, and it failed.

Whenever you have two people working dilligently against the other person, nothing will ever get accomplished.  By having two parties in the office of the Presidency, you will cause more friction, and cause the country to be MORE divided.

The reason nobody has given a better alternative is because there isn't a better alternative.

I think we can most all agree that a biparticin Pres / VP will only lead to confict.

While it is easy to sit back and find flaws, in reality, our government is just about a perfect system.  It is TOTALLY self regulating.... and that is the key to freedom.

IF, and here is a big "if", the government ever truely became "unified" the rights of the people would get flushed down the toilet.  A unified government sure sounds nice, but think about what would happen if the government all got along and agreed?

In order to close the partisan divide, we would all have to agree on one set of policy.  We would all have to agree on taxes, and abortion, and gun control, and economic policy, and foreign affairs, and all the other issues we face.  And I for one, am not willing to change my stance on something just to conform with the rest of society.

Actually, the chest pounding and foot stomping gets annoying, really fast.... but if it wasn't for people that were so passionate, I don't think anybody would really be movitvated.  Even if I TOTALLY disagree with them, I have to at least respect the fact that they are passionate enough to do something about it... Sometimes its moronic, but its at least honorable.

I truly feel that we are a stronger country because we are ununified.  Its a really bad cliche, but "opposites attract"... and they attract without some level of friction and conflict, you don't have a reason to change anything and make it better.

What you describe is not a dislike for politics, or a bipartisan government, you are describing a dislike for the public media.  You see, if you are familiar with basic statistics, if you follow a normal distrobution curve, 98% of the population will fall within 2x the standard deviation away from the average.  In other words, 98% of the population are normal, 2% are az$holes.

This is where the media comes into play.  The media's goal is to get as many people fired up as possible, to do this they focus on the 2%, to get the 98% all worked up.  The media makes that 2% seem like a much larger group than they really are.

In reality, most people are pretty respectful.  We don't really care what's going on behind closed doors.  We don't really care who does what.  We don't really care about any one else's but our own's business.  We don't really need that information..... BUT if somebody is going to tell us, we will listen.

Very rarely do the candidates themselves come up with "dirt" on other candidates, its most always someone else's doings.  But once it comes to the surface, you can bet they will use it to their advantage.

  3. there is no reason they can't run side-by-side.  a republican could pick a democratic VP or vice-versa.  they just wouldn't get enough votes to win.

  4. Party Unity My A$#

  5. because there would probably be assassination attempts, by the VP choice

  6. Honestly, I think this system is great.  The last thing I would want is to be "joined" with a democrat!!

  7. One can only dream...

I'd rather see an independent in the white house, if you ask me.

  8. The last thing a Democrat wants is to be associated with Bush or Cheney.
