Why is it ok to be anti- American yet if you were anti any other nationality you would be called a racist?

You make a good point, Islam is not a race either but to object to millions on Muslims moving into the UK and USA from failed Islamic countries nearly always attracts the "racist" mantra from those who want to change the West into an Islamic area.

I am against the Iraq war and the neo con men; however many use anti American slogans when they mean anti neo con men slogans.If people made anti Muslim slogans against for example the Taliban in the same way it would be called racist. Actually I am tired of false British of immigrant extraction using the word "racist" to promote mass immigration.

I hear that a lot here in the states, I know exactly what you are talking about. If you are white, then you must be punished for what ever conflicts your forfathers had with any other nation. I hear things like this a lot in the immigration section of y! answers, it don't take you long to relize that it is being spwed out by some pro LaRaza ( hispanic hate group) member/ supporter that is just trying to justify his illegal entrey into our country.

Deport illegals, and keep the dream alive.

Usually "anti American" is a political statement, not so much a racial statement. America after all, is probably only about 65% Caucasian anyway (and census figures predict that it will be less than 50% Caucasian within 25 years). My philosophy is this, outside the US, do or say whatever you want, it's your country. But don't think your gonna burn my flag within these borders. President Cheney hasn't done us any favours the last eight years in our standing abroad also, so can you really blame the Anti Yank backlash?

American is not a race.  And just because you disagree with something i.e. the american's going to war against anyone who disagrees with them does not make you racist.

It is more to do with being against the way the USA is being run.  It has turned into some super power bordering on a fascist regime.  The American president was elected through dead people voting and alive people not being able to.  The war on Iraq was completely without proper reason.  President Bush had the gall to speak out about China's human rights atrocities whilst people are being tortured in Guantanamo bay as we speak.

America isn't a race.  Most people who you would describe as anti-American have no particular gripe against the American people as a whole - just their government's foreign policy.

I suppose it comes down to power in the end - as does everything.  As America is so powerful noone feels themselves to be in a position of a bully.  With other nationalities it's normally a stronger nation picking holes in a weaker one.

It isn't ok to be racist whether that's against Americans or anyone else.  If you have a point, it should be about the point - not a general sweep at a whole nationality.

It's not entirely true. In Britain you can also get away with being anti-french and anti-german without being racist.

It can't just be about colour either cos it seems to also be acceptable to make fun of people with ginger hair or to tell jokes implying that women with blonde hair are less intelligent than everyone else.

It's not ok to be anti-American.  However  most people who are accused of being anti-American are actually just criticising the government rather than every single American person.  But I personally hate it when people say 'All Americans are ...' (stupid, fat, whatever) and to me it is just as offensive as being rude about other races or nationalities.
