Perhaps some of us do not wish to be great.  Greatness it the aspiration of the ego, and the path of humility can lead to better understanding of who we are.  To be great and know it means humility is lost, and with it insight and connection with others.  If others recognize you as great, then that is their perception.  Nobody really knows who are the heroes in this world.  We can all do great deeds, but be rotten people inside, and vice versa.

I am not a buddhist, or a philosopher, just someone who has genuinely never aspired to greatness.  Maybe it is a lack of ambition, but my only purpose is to be true to what I am, faults and all.  Just another person bumbling through life, maybe there are better people, but somehow I don't envy them.  There are so many who are more beautiful than me, cleverer, kinder, more compassionate, and I've over the years just learnt to accept it.

As with all things, it is a learning process.  What is great to one isn't great to another.  Low self esteem can cause us not to recognize our gift or talent.  Laziness can cause us not to perfect it to its potential greatness.

Because we live in a shaming blaming society and learn to keep our heads down as some one will inevitably shout at you

"Who do you think you are!"

It isn't so much fear of our own greatness that is the barrier as fear o f others response to it.

i think it's because they first have to realise that it has nothing to do with being the strongest, the bravest, the most clever, or the most successful; all the things we are told we must be not to be a failure, it's hard for people to see the truth in themselves when they view themself from other peoples standards.

not everyone  is great, and maybe the time it takes is only part of the journey of becoming.
