Why is it "more exciting for the fans" to break head on in 9ball?

was watching an interview with rodney morris and he said that is more exciting for the fans to see a head on break in nine ball, why is this?

He also mentioned a slice break, whats this?

  1. The head on break is more exciting because you get to see the balls fly all over the place, and generally that's how non-pros break.

    The slice or soft break starts with the cue ball near one of the rails and is hit at a slower speed.  With practice, you can virtually guarantee a ball will be pocketed and get good position for the next shot.  In addition, it tends to keep all the balls on one side of the table making the run out easier.  Basically, it makes the game more predictable.


  2. Tim's right. Most amateurs can't break nearly as hard as most pros, and even if they can generate the same amount of power they usually can't keep the cue ball on the table. Watching a guy like Fransisco Bustamante throw his weight into a power break is kind of like watching Tiger Woods tee off.
