Why is it "sox" instead of "socks?"

  1. The person that originally typed up the paperwork was pretty illerate when they typed what they were told.  


  2. The White Sox were originally the White Stockings. Sox was an abbreviation used for newspaper headlines.

  3. Probably has more to do with the fact that early team names were not official - they were very often coined by the sportswriters. And given that in those days all of the type was set by hand, having a couple less letters each time you printed Sox would save time, not to mention space in the headlines.
